ARTICLE: How Baseball Bats Are Made?
By Jason Gluckman

A baseball bat is a smooth rod made of wood or metal. High-quality wooden, metal, and composite type bats are available. Most wooden bats are made from maple, ash, hickory, and bamboo. Titanium and aluminum are the prime metals used in metal baseball bats.

Bats are available in a variety of models, sizes, and options. The ?barrel,? also called ?sweet spot,? is the thick part of the bat where it is meant to hit the ball. The end part of barrel is called ?tip.? The barrel narrows down and becomes the ?handle.? The next region is the ?knob,? which lies close to the handle. The total length of a bat is limited to 42 inches, and the thickest part has a diameter of 2.7 inches (70 mm). A standard bat has a weight of around 39 ounces (1.1 kg).

Generally, two methods are used for bat crafting, namely single-piece and two-piece construction. In single-piece construction, no assembly is required and the bat is crafted as a whole. The design strategies followed during the construction stage will influence its overall strength and performance.

The first step is the selection of an appropriate wood (in the case of wooden bats). Durable type woods are power-bonded into billets and then turned and sanded. High-tech wood kilns are used to remove the moisture content from wood. Patented reinforcement is then applied to the handle, and the bat is completed with a two-coat lacquer finish. Finally, the bat is dyed in one of the seven standard colors. The main colors used are natural white, red stain, black, two-tone blue and white stain.

The bat's unique design allows hitting the ball from any side of the barrel. In some bats, handle parts are made of metal alloy or filter composite material, and the hitting part is made of wood. The barrels may be single-piece construction or made of two or more pieces. Laminated wooden bats can be designed by combining wood material, fiberglass, and carbon-reinforced handles and barrels. In aluminum bat construction, alloy-strengthening additives are used, which gives better performance and durability than wooden bats.

In two-piece construction, the handle and barrel are two separate parts and joined by any material, usually rubber. Baseball bats for Little League, senior league, and college levels are crafted after considering certain parameters, depending on particular requirements.
